Even though I started it last spring, it really needs to be finished so I can wear it a little before the warm weather comes, it's perfect for TV watching, and I'll feel a great satisfaction when it's done. And it's fun to unravel those stitches every 12 rows.

Here's the plan -- I think I can get through the middle section and well into the decreases -- if not completely finish -- by the closing ceremonies. And I noticed that the rather pricey Lorna's Laces Lion and Lamb yarn is the "Valentine" colorway so it seems perfect for a February finish.

I'm off to the SPA weekend in Portland, Maine, with my buddy Susan tomorrow -- I don't know how much Olympics I'll be watching but I hope to do a lot of knitting (on Clapotis!).

The agony of defeat....

I'm afraid I've already taken a number of tumbles. Started out during the Opening Ceremonies and got through ten rows -- and knew that my arithmetic was a little off -- despite the fact that there are actually 17 days of the Olympics I still wasn't going to make my daily quota. The yarn was too thin and the pattern was too complicated. I needed something that was a lot of straight-ahead knitting -- more like downhill skiing or speed skating instead of skating the long program.

Not being into guilt, I told myself to just persevere with the stole and whatever was done by the end of the Olympics would be good enough. I resumed with row 11 on Saturday (day 2). I followed the pattern carefully but end up with one too few stitches at the end of the row. I gave up.

On Sunday, feeling back in the flow, I started to pick apart row 11 -- well, you know lace -- I dropped a yarnover somewhere and that was it! I was tumbling down the mountain. I frogged the damn thing.

Not to be discouraged, I pulled out a simple cabled headband and did a repeat -- I was back in the groove. I measured and it seemed to be done -- so I settled down the pull the provisional cast-on stitches out so I could execute a three-needle bind-off (difficulty = 5). The cast-on stitches (which were crocheted) would not, under any circumstances, unravel. I couldn't figure it out. I decided to start carefully cutting -- big mistake. It's like when you try to cut your own bangs -- I cut some off one side, I cut some off the other side. I tried carefully to get back to a full row of stitches so I could just bind off from there -- absolutely no luck. I chucked the mess in the trash and watched Cold Case.

Is my Olympic career over? Can I make the transition to another "sport"? Dum, dum, da, dum, dum, dum......

Going for the Gold....

It's kind of last minute but I've decided to join Team Boston for the Knitting Olympics (and it seemed a good reason to resurrect the blog). I'll be competing in the Hanging Garden Lace Stole competition -- #3 needles and a very lovely laceweight Alpaca (given to me by my "no longer secret" pal Puma Momma). It's been a long time since I've knitted lace and I sure didn't train properly.

I did the math -- 600 rows divided by 16 days equals 37.5 rows a day -- this is rather daunting but not impossible -- that's 4012.5 stitches each 24 hours. Or with 13 pattern repeats over 48 rows that's -- never mind, I'm sticking with the 4012.5 stitches. At least I am not making Hardangervidda!!!!

My Secret Pal....

I'm woefully behind in showing you the wonderful packages from my secret pal.

One from August:

<img style="FLOAT: left; And the slipped stitches on the armholes make them look finished without after the fact crocheting (ugh!).

After blocking, the yarn became beautifully soft with a nice drape though it stretched a bit length-wide despite my best efforts to contain it.

I haven't worn it yet but with the perfect fall weather we're having in Boston I might just get my chance tomorrow.

It's definitely knitting book season -- I spotted both Melanie Fallick's and The Harlot's new books on the shelves at Borders today. It really makes me laugh. I think each generation should have their own music and it's no fun if the grownups are listening to the tunes that you are.

In any case -- I love the music of my generation -- early 60s to late 70s -- in all its depth and breadth. It fills me with a joy that I don't experience from much else and have never been able to explain that feeling -- I try to get people to listen to my favorites but they never seem to have the same reaction that I do.

I bought Sticky Fingers on CD after the Stones concert a couple of weeks ago -- I'm sure I have it on vinyl somewhere but you can't play vinyl in your cube. Here's one of my favorites -- it's a song to be stoned to but I haven't been stoned in a very long time and it still sounds good to me:

MOONLIGHT MILE
Recorded in March & May, 1970.
Released April 23, 1971 on the album Sticky Fingers
Lead Vocals: Mick Jagger
Electric Guitar and Slide Guitar: Mick Taylor
Acoustic Guitar: Mick Jagger
Drums: Charlie Watts
Bass: Bill Wyman
Piano: Jim Price
Strings: Paul Buckmaster

MOONLIGHT MILE
(M. Jagger/K. It's from one of my favorite albums (yes, album!) called Blows Against the Empire -- by some of the members of Jefferson Airplane and some guest musicians. It's a science fiction story by Paul Kantner about a group of hippies getting on a starship and flying away from the conversative America of Richard Nixon (it was released in 1970, can you tell?) I don't even know how I got into it -- I certainly wasn't listening to Jefferson Airplane in 1970 -- I was 15 years old and grooving to Sweet Baby James and the Beatles.

Anyway, it's my up against the wall, motherf----ker, album and I play it really loud over headphones when I get a little perturbed by something at work.

This song is not even my favorite but I posted it for some reason two months ago so here it is....

STARSHIP

Words: Kantner, Slick, Balin, Blackman
Music: Kantner

What you gonna do when you feel your lady rollin`
How you gonna feel when you see your lady strollin`
On the deck of the starship
With her head hooked into Andromeda
C`mon Hijack
Gotta get back and ahead to the things that matter
Amerika hates her crazies
And you gotta let go you know
gotta let go you know
gotta let go you know
gotta let go you know or else you stay
SPILLIN` OUT OF THE STEEL GLASS
GRAVITY GONE FROM THE CAGE
A MILLION POUNDS GONE FROM YOUR HEAVY MASS
ALL THE YEARS GONE FROM YOUR AGE
Hydroponic gardens and forests
Glistening with lakes in the Jupiter starlite
Room for babies and Byzantine dancing astronauts of renown
The magician and the pantechnicon
Take along the farmer and the physician
We gotta get out and down
Back into the future
Beyond our own time again
Reachin` for tomorrow
It`s so fine Starshine
THE MELTING ACID FEVER STREAKIN` THRU MY MIND
MAKES IT AH SO DIFFICULT TO SEE YOU
AND AH SO EASY TO TOUCH YOU
I MELT WITH YOU
FEEL WITH YOU
MAKE LOVE FOR YOU
AT YOU
AROUND YOU
I LOVE YOU
Dear Brumus, the ship`ll be ours and you got to roll with it
And tho` your master`s head`s blown off you got to go with it
Roll with the natural flow
Like water off a spinning ball
Out - the one remaining way to go
Free - the only way to fall
The light in the night is the sun
And it can carry you around the planetary ground
And the planetary whip of the sun
Will carry you well past Gideon
And the people you see will leave you be
more than the ones you`ve known before
Hey - rollin` on
We come and go like a comet
We are wanderers
Are you anymore?
The land is green and you make it grow
And you gotta let go you know
You gotta let go you know
You gotta let go you know
Or else you stay
MANKIND GONE FROM THE CAGE
ALL THE YEARS GONE FROM YOUR AGE
At first
I was irridescent
Then
I became transparent
Finally
I was absent

A Taste of Yarn (and much more....)

I spent Saturday at a Taste of Yarn knitting party -- I was easily the oldest person there and spent a lot of time trying not to make statements like -- "well, twenty years ago..." and "when I first moved to Boston in 1973" -- but I was really struck by the whole scene. There were 14 knitters (14!) swapping yarns and needles, swatching different yarns, discussing gauge and drape and what would work with what, and they were almost all bloggers -- letting their knitting adventures be shared by the rest of the knitting world. There was some discussion of the blogging process but it was mostly about the relationships that blogging fosters -- both good and bad -- and an appreciation of the power of both the virtual community -- and the excitement of meeting everyone in person.

The reason that this fascinated me was that none of this existed when I started knitting in 1977 (sorry I had to say it!). I had a roommate that knit and it was a cold and snowy winter as I remember so there was a lot of sitting on the couch and watching TV. I must have expressed some interest in having her teach me to knit because I know that I spent the Blizzard of '78 on that same couch knitting a somewhat complicated Aran-ish sweater in a off-white kind of wool. (I may still have that sweater but I don't think I could get my little toe into it now.) I bought my supplies at the only yarn shop I knew of -- on Beacon Street in Brookline. Soon after I must have discovered Woolcott though it was called something else then -- and for the next 20 years I shopped there. Eventually Knitters magazine started publishing and opened my eyes to Fair Isle, and lace, and technique, and "well-known" knitters like Elizabeth Zimmerman -- and every so often a book would be published (contrast that with 96 titles in the queue on Amazon) many of which are being republished now to a new knitting audience.

I had one friend who knit during most of those years -- my wonderful friend Susan -- I meet her in 1980 and we're still friends and knitting pals -- so we would swap patterns and answer each other's questions and get excited about new books. There were no online resources, no ways to easily connect with other knitters -- in fact, the only guild I remember knowing about met during the day which really pissed me off.

And no one was going to Sheep and Wool Festivals! At least not those of us in the city. Who knew they would end up being the social scene of 2005.

I don't know where I'm going with all this -- it's just what I was thinking about at the party. I think I want to welcome all you wonderful women (and men) to the world of knitting, something that I've enjoyed for a long time -- and thank you for contributing to the renewed interest in the craft (spawning new yarns, patterns, books, blogs, community, and on and on), and say that I hope to see the local knitting community continue to thrive.

Bloggers block....

Boy, this blogging thing is a lot tougher than I thought -- it's hard to post regularly. I have a list going of really interesting things to blog about but somehow I miss the opportune moment to actually get them into the blog. Like, do you really care now that I went to Starbucks three weeks ago to meet my friend Susan, and spend some time knitting and there was the Subway Knitter in that exact Starbucks, knitting away as I walked in? (It really was pretty amazing....)

Or that the Yarn Harlot event at Circles (two weeks ago!) was a lot of fun and that I met a lot of local bloggers who dutifully blogged about the party the day after it happened? (But I did make a new friend -- Ms. SSP -- who I hope to see again soon -- check out her new book!)

Or that I am wrestling with sewing a zipper into the Cardi and it is not easy but I have no pictures to show of the messiness?

Or that Rob (also known as Mr. Bookish) designed a fabulous banner for me in March but I never find the time to figure out how to get it on the Picassa/Hello server thing so you can all see it?

Well, at least here's something from today that Mrs. Bookish (see "Mr. Bookish" above) sent me -- it's a web ring for librarians who knit -- which is exactly what I am.

Wire Hanger Disclaimer

Maryse Marcia had us take our measurements and worked with us to customize her Christina's Jacket pattern to our bodies. Lots of math and many great design tips later we all left with our own personalized pattern.

I went with a dark inky blue and white in beautiful Karabella Zodiac -- a shiny mercerized cotton. It's my next project after the Ribby Cardi. I'm finishing the sleeves on the Cardi tonight and hope to block and sew it this week. Pictures soon!

In more knitting news, spent a lovely Thursday evening with my knitting buddies Barbara, Wendy, and Colleen. Great food, great blocking tips, and Wendy turned me on to a really cool hat pattern. It seems like double knitting -- ribbed on the outside but plain on the inside. Can't wait to try it.

Knitting, knitting, knitting, blogging, and reading...

Another wonderful event last night at my very lys -- this one with Amy Barrie from Lincoln Farm Design showing us rug hooking designs. It seemed to end with a whimper rather than a bang -- all those great plots and characters -- I expected a little more something. Any thoughts from the blogosphere?

Have a great weekend everybody!

Rockin' weekend....

Acoustic music at Perk's

A night of audio charisma (scroll down to the 9th review) at Perk's Coffeehouse in Norwood as A (on the left) plays with his friend Mr. Curt. Mom and I make an annual pilgrimage to The Book and the Cook Festival. It's a great event where cookbook authors team up with Philly restaurants, design a menu, do some cooking, stop by each table to talk, and sell/sign their latest cookbook. I'm not a foodie (though my mom sure is!) but it's always a great time. This year we're treating ourselves to a rather chi-chi lunch with Mireille Guiliano who wrote "French Women Don't Get Fat."

The important question -- what knitting to bring? I think it will be the Yarns Downunder wavy scarf (the short rows are lots of fun) and the Chicknits ribby cardi which needs some quality time. I'll have about five hours on the train each way so what better to do than knit.

A package went out to my secret knitting pal this week -- hope she likes what's in it!

Yoga and knitting...

Spent a wonderful weekend in Westborough doing yoga. The yoga I study (and taught until very recently) is called Svaroopa® -- it’s a slow deep form of yoga that emphasizes the release of the muscles along the spine. It’s great for everyone, especially those with sore backs. If you're looking for something a little different from the current aerobic, hot, sweaty yoga, then try Svaroopa® . A list of teachers is available on the Master Yoga Foundation website.

*Svaroopa means “the Bliss of your own Being.” It's mentioned in Patanjali's Yoga Sutra 1.3 --tadaa drashtuh svaroope ‘vasthanam -- when the mind becomes quiet, you will abide in the bliss of your own being. I highly recommend it -- just a fascinating read. I also recently finished John LeCarre's Absolute Friends. I'm a LeCarre fan from way back but hadn't read much of his stuff recently. It was classic LeCarre -- wonderful characters -- twisted plot.

Where did it come from (library, bookstore, gift, etc.)?

Though I am very non-committal when it comes to my book-buying funds (I'll buy books anywhere) I did buy the Time Traveler's Wife at my local bookstore Village Books. I just bought Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell tonight so that's my next read for the work commute.

How many books do you read per year?

I have no idea -- I think the more interesting question would be how many books do I buy each year (a lot!).

What is your favorite genre?

I buy a lot of knitting and yoga books but am just getting back into reading novels again. Marcia's designs are available on her website -- a site I drool over pretty regularly -- and it was fun to see her designs "in person."

I had neglected to bring a project so had to buy one while I was there! I picked up a skein of Filatura di Crosa Baby Kid Extra and the funkiest, shortest green plastic Clover circular needles from Japan and started an Airy Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. (Easy pattern but the kid mohair is slow-going.)

Anyway, that adds yet another project to my active pile of one Bonne Marie Ribby Cardi, one Anny Blatt mohair and ribbon scarf, one wavy scarf with Stacy Charles Ritratto (this is a fabulous short row pattern from Yarns Down Under in Connecticut), and one baby hat for a baby born in November.

Help! (Another blog name from my husband was Bags of Knitting on Every Doorknob...)

Here's a little confirmation from the universe....

Many of you who know me know that I've been thinking about blogging for quite a long time but was really stymied by what to name my blog. It seemed really important that the name be just perfect before I could start writing. My husband, A., came up with a lot of great and funny names like Cereal for Dinner, I'm Not Here Right Now (what I always say when the phone rings), and Stinkknits (knits spelled backwards) but nothing was quite right. And then I heard a snip of an old Donovan song -- Happiness Runs -- on a tv commercial and it hit a nerve. And I was seriously considing it for the name. I looked at the rest of the lyrics though and they were a little sappy -- and Lennon's song Instant Karma popped into my head -- and that was it! The blog would be named Instant Karma -- it was perfect! But there already was an Instant Karma blog on Blogger. So I started humming the song and there it was -- Shine On. So much what I want my life to be...

Well, that's the first part of the story. The second is that I rarely listen to music on the car radio (or at home for that matter) -- I'm pretty much an NPR woman. Sometimes when I'm in the car, though, and the NPR subject matter is a little dry, I'll switch to the River or an oldie station to see if I can catch any of the music that I love. I was driving to Cambridge, and I hit the button, and there it was ....

...A super star
Well, right you are

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Ev'ryone come on...

Pretty cool, don't you think...

Well we all shine on....

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you right on the head
You better get yourself together
Pretty soon, you're gonna be dead
What in the world you thinking of
Laughing in the face of love
What on earth you tryin' to do
It's up to you, yeah you

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna look you right in the face
You better get yourself together darlin'
Join the human race
How in the world you gonna see
Laughin' at fools like me
Who in the heck d'you think you are
A super star
Well, right you are

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Ev'ryone come on

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Ev'ryone you meet
Why in the world are we here?
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you're ev'rywhere
Come and get your share

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Yeah yeah alright ah ah
-- John Lennon

Let the blogging adventure begin....
